When Copper Stops Being Enough

Copper cable (Cat6, Cat6A) has real limits. The two biggest ones are distance — signal degrades past 100 meters — and interference. In industrial environments with motors, machinery, or long parallel runs alongside power lines, copper picks up electrical noise that degrades performance in ways that are hard to trace. Fiber optic has neither problem. It runs much further with no signal loss, it’s completely immune to electromagnetic interference, and the bandwidth ceiling is high enough that it’s effectively never the bottleneck.

Fiber is the right answer in specific scenarios: building-to-building runs at a campus or multi-building site, riser cabling between floors in multi-story buildings, runs longer than 100 meters within a single building, industrial environments with electromagnetic interference, and high-bandwidth applications where 10 Gbps copper isn’t enough.

Fiber installation is genuinely a different skill from copper. Fusion splicing requires equipment most cabling contractors don’t own. Termination requires polishing fiber ends to optical-grade tolerances. Testing requires OTDR equipment, not just a basic cable tester. Get any of it wrong and the fiber works — but with high loss, intermittent issues, or eventual failure. Fiber Optic for Every Commercial Scenario

Single-Mode Fiber

Long-distance runs, building-to-building, campus interconnects. Smaller core (9 microns), works with laser-based transceivers. Effectively unlimited bandwidth and distance for commercial applications.

Multi-Mode Fiber

Shorter-distance runs within a single building or campus. Larger core, works with LED or VCSEL transceivers. OM3 and OM4 grades support 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps within typical building distances.

Fusion Splicing

Fiber sections joined with fusion splicers — fiber ends melted together to form an essentially continuous fiber. Lower loss than mechanical splices, more reliable, the right method for backbone work and any installation that has to last.

OTDR Testing & Certification

Every fiber run tested with an OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer). Test results documented, identifying any splice or connector loss, attenuation, and overall link performance. So you know the link actually works to spec.

Outdoor & Direct-Burial Fiber

Armored fiber for direct burial between buildings. Aerial fiber for pole runs. Outdoor-rated cable for transitions through unconditioned spaces. We design for environment and pull-distance to make sure the cable survives the install and the environment for the long haul.

Common Fiber Optic Questions

QDo we need fiber or will copper be enough?

For runs under 100 meters within a single building, copper (Cat6 or Cat6A) is usually fine and significantly cheaper. For runs over 100 meters, building-to-building, riser cabling, or environments with significant electrical interference, fiber is the right choice. We assess during the site survey and recommend the appropriate cable type for each segment.

QSingle-mode or multi-mode?

Single-mode for long distances and any application where future bandwidth needs are uncertain — it’s the safer choice for backbone work. Multi-mode (OM3 or OM4) for shorter runs where cost matters and the bandwidth/distance requirements are clearly bounded. For new installations, single-mode is increasingly the default because the price difference is small and it removes future limitations.

QHow much does fiber installation cost?

Per-foot pricing varies by cable type, pathway difficulty (open trench vs. directional bore vs. attic pull), and termination count. We provide written quotes after the site survey.

QCan fiber run alongside our existing copper cabling?

Yes — fiber and copper coexist easily. Most modern installations use fiber for backbone (between closets, buildings, or floors) and copper for the last-30-meter drops to workstations. We design the cable plant as an integrated system.

QWhat about new construction fiber?

Significantly easier and cheaper during construction. We work with GCs on Boise-area construction projects to install fiber risers during rough-in, plan for future expansion, and document the cable plant.

QDo you do direct-burial fiber between buildings?

Yes — common for multi-building campuses. We coordinate with your GC or excavator for trenching, install armored direct-burial fiber, and terminate cleanly inside each building. For sites where trenching isn’t practical, aerial fiber on existing poles is an alternative.
