Most small business networks are designed by accident. Someone plugged in a router, added a switch when they needed more ports, plugged in a Wi-Fi access point, and over time the “network” grew into whatever happened to work that day. It runs — until it doesn’t.

From there we design layered, segmented networks with proper firewalls, VLANs for different traffic types, redundant paths where they matter, and centralized management.

Firewall Configuration

Properly configured business firewalls — not just default settings. Inbound rules, outbound filtering, web filtering, IPS/IDS, VPN for remote access. We deploy Sophos, SonicWall, Fortinet, or whatever fits your environment.

VLAN Segmentation

Separate VLANs for staff, guests, cameras, phones, point-of-sale, IoT devices. Each VLAN isolated for security. Inter-VLAN routing controlled by firewall rules. Standard for any business serious about security.

Managed Switches

Real managed switches (not unmanaged consumer gear) — Ubiquiti, Cisco, Aruba, or HPE. PoE+ for cameras and APs. VLAN support. SNMP monitoring. Spanning Tree for loop prevention.

Network design is the architecture — what equipment is needed, how it interconnects, how traffic flows, what security policies are in place, how it scales. Buying equipment without design produces ad-hoc networks that work until they don’t. Design first, equipment second.

QWhat size businesses need formal network design?

Any business with multiple sites, compliance requirements (PCI, HIPAA), more than 20 users, or significant uptime requirements really benefits from professional network design. Yes — part of network design is planning hardware lifecycle. Most managed switches and firewalls have 5-7 year useful life. We track equipment age and plan refresh cycles so you’re not running on equipment that’s out of support.
