Every commercial building has cabling. What separates a well-cabled building from a badly-cabled one is invisible when things work — and painfully obvious when they don’t. Poor terminations show up as intermittent connection drops that get blamed on random things. Missing labels turn a 30-minute troubleshoot into a 3-hour cable trace. No documentation means every new IT team starts from scratch. The wrong cable in the wrong space is a code violation waiting to be found.

Total Techs installs structured cabling to BICSI standards. Certified Cat6 or Cat6A terminations. Every drop labeled at both ends. Documented in a cabling diagram. Color-coded by purpose. Cat6 & Cat6A Copper

Cat6 is the standard for most commercial drops — supports 1 Gbps at 100 meters, 10 Gbps at shorter runs. Cat6A is required for 10 Gbps at full distance and is the safer choice for new construction where future bandwidth needs are uncertain.

Network Racks & Patch Panels

Properly racked network closets with patch panels, cable management arms, surge protection, UPS battery backup, and proper labeling. No more milk crates with switches sitting on top.

Wireless Access Point Drops

Wi-Fi is only as good as the cabling feeding it. Ceiling drops to access points with proper PoE-capable cabling, positioned by a site survey for actual signal coverage — not by guesswork.

Camera & Security Drops

PoE cabling to every camera location, access control reader, and alarm panel. Designed together with the rest of the cabling so cameras don’t compete with workstations for bandwidth.

VoIP Phone Drops

One cable per desk for phone and computer, with the phone passing through to the computer. Or separate drops where preferred. PoE feeds the phones — no power adapters cluttering desks.

Tenant Improvements

Cabling During Construction vs. After Drywall Closes

Structured cabling during new construction is significantly cheaper and cleaner than retrofitting later. When walls are open during rough-in, cable runs, network closets, and pathway design can be executed without disruption. Once drywall closes, every new cable run means fishing walls, cutting access holes, and working around existing tenants or operations.

For Boise-area new construction — new office buildings, medical complexes, retail centers, multi-tenant developments — we work with GCs and developers to plan and install cabling during rough-in. Drops to every workspace, network closet locations, riser pathways for multi-floor buildings, plenum-rated cabling where required by code, and documentation that lets future tenants and IT teams understand the building’s infrastructure.

For retrofits and tenant improvements, we work around active tenants and operations. Pulling cable through occupied buildings requires more care and planning — evening or weekend work where necessary, sensitivity to noise and traffic, cleanup at the end of every session. But retrofits are absolutely doable, and they’re a big part of what we do.

Common Cabling Questions

QCat6 or Cat6A — which do we need?

Cat6 is standard for most commercial environments and supports 10 Gbps over short runs. Cat6A is required for 10 Gbps at the full 100-meter distance and is the safer choice for new construction. For most retrofits Cat6 is fine; for new construction we usually recommend Cat6A.

QHow much does structured cabling cost?

Pricing is per-drop, with rates varying based on the complexity of the run (existing building with finished walls costs more than open new construction), the cable type (Cat6A costs more than Cat6), and the volume (per-drop pricing drops with larger projects). We provide written quotes after the site survey.

QCan we add drops to an existing cable plant?

Usually yes. If the existing network closet has rack space and the panel count works, adding new drops is straightforward. If the existing infrastructure is maxed out or poorly designed, we may recommend modest upgrades to the closet alongside the new drops.

QWhat about fiber optic?

For longer runs (over 100 meters), building-to-building runs, riser cabling in multi-story buildings, and high-bandwidth applications, fiber is the right answer. We handle fiber installation on the fiber optic page.

QDo you do work for general contractors?

Yes. We’re a regular low-voltage sub for GCs working across the Boise metro. Schedule coordination, pricing for bid packages, BIM coordination on larger projects, all standard.

QDo you certify the cable plant?

Yes. Every drop is tested with a Fluke certifier and results are provided to you. This documentation matters for warranty claims, insurance, and future troubleshooting.
